Types of building simulations - Overview and short description

Inhaltsverzeichnis

Common aspects

This site provides a first overview about different types of simulations for buildings. It is focusing on users which are interested in simulation techniques but not yet familiar with the details of simulations.

If you are an experienced simulationist, please change to the expert-site simulation model, -algorithm and -techniques.

Which types of simulations are available ? An overview

For buildings a lot of different computer simulations are available, which are answering various purposes (e.g. energy analysis, temperatures, statics, visualization, etc.). For this background it is interesting that especially sustainable and energy efficient buildings require superior planning tools. The context between trendsetting, ecological building concepts and simulations is shown in the following figure.

context between sustainability and simulation techniques

Simupedia is mainly focusing on simulation types for building performance; this means energy in all its forms/appearances, technical plants, energy consumption, air flow, humidity, daylight, temperatures, etc. are analyzed.
The appropriate type of simulation strongly depends on the problem, which should be solved - see figure above or Which simulation type to be used ?

Subsequent the most frequently used simulation types are listed and described shortly.

plant simulation (building)

room/building simulation (zone(s))

simulation by air flow nodes (zone(s))

natural ventilation - singleside

natural ventilations of large halls

horizontal cross flow of air (floor/storey)

vertikal duct flow (building)

Remarks and limitations

high resolving air flow simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics (distribution in a room)

high resolving simulation, FEM (distribution in a component)

daylight simulation (room)
